I'd put that right up there with having a 50 mile drive for Earth Day....

file under "missing the point"...
you mean as opposed to driving in your car and using fuel to get to an event at some large city near you and consuming hotdogs and sodas in disposable packaging and leaving it in a sure to be overflowing trashcan or perhaps on the ground and using a porta potty that uses copious amounts of chemistry to difuse the nasty....
Earth day and conservation awareness comes in all forms. I find an online forum (be it graphical like SL or any other type) devoted to Earth Day, conservation and "green" awareness to be right on the money.
Or they could just do the cyber. Which has nothing to do with Earth Day and doesn't increase anyone's awareness.
I'd say it was right on the point.
Awareness is one thing and I completely agree with that. But a major point of Earth Day is to go out and enjoy the Earth. I don't see how you can do that in Second Life. I mean, plant a virtual tree doesn't really help the environment the way a real one does.
Of course, it does inspire to me start virtual forest fires. ;)
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day"Earth Day, celebrated in the US on April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. " It doesn't say that its about going out and enjoying the Earth. It says its about inspiring awareness and appreciation for the environment. I bet that those attending a SL celebration appreciated more and are more aware than many who went outdoors, drank bottled water, ate junk food in disposable packaging, and used gas to get to their preferred site of appreciation.
Instead of going outside and being directly inspired by the Earth itself, which takes no more effort that simply walking out my door, I'm going to fire up my electricity using computer and connect with other people using electricity using computers to experience it virtually from the comfort of my own mass produced recliner.
That's about on the level as eating junk food from disposable packaging and drinking bottled water in my book. Then again, I spent 6 Summers teaching nature camps so I'm a little biased.
There's all sorts of ways to massively foul things up - goes with the whole "being human" thing.
No, the point of Earth Day is conservationism.. some of us are trying to spread that idea through Second Life too...
Which again, is perfectly cool. I'd just think that any Earth Day program would encourage people to turn off their computers for a day and go out to actually DO something for the Earth they are conserving - whether it be a park clean-up, planting a garden, spending the day "off the grid". |
